IMSERSO: Holidays for pensioners and disabled people in Spain

IMSERSO (IMCERSO) is a Spanish government organization dedicated to providing recreation and tourism for the elderly and disabled. Millions of seniors, both Spanish and foreigners living in the country, are eligible for travel subsidies that range from 115 to 455 euros, depending on the length of the trip. The organization provides special programs and services for those who need help and support while traveling.

Imser trips have been going on for a year now, and there are many destinations to choose from for a vacation. Although in some cases economic surcharges are applied to the agreed price, these itineraries are a great opportunity for retirees to visit cities and towns in Spain. While most prefer coastal areas, there are inland options as well.

Although the vast majority of destinations are already full, some itineraries still have spaces available, both coastal trips and so-called cultural itineraries. The latter are aimed at visiting iconic monuments, museums and other attractions in the cities and towns on offer, rather than just a few days of relaxing on the beach.

Cultural itineraries are an option for the most inquisitive of travelers

Imserso's trips are divided into three destinations: mainland coast destinations, island coast destinations (Canary and Balearic Islands) and short vacation tourism, that is, inland. Within this last type, there are several categories such as the aforementioned cultural destinations, nature tourism, provincial capitals and the autonomous cities of Ceuta and Melilla, so that everyone can choose what best suits their desires.

Cultural trips offer many destinations for retirees who love art, literature, architecture or history. Examples include cities in Meseta, such as Valladolid, one of the best to visit at Christmas, or Logroño, as well as in the north, including Gijon or Santander, and even in the south, such as Cordoba or Granada.

You can also book trips to places like San Lucar de Barrameda, Aranjuez or Talavera de la Reina. Therefore, this is a great travel option for retirees.

What is included and how do I sign up for an Imserso trip?

This type of package includes full board accommodation (except in provincial capitals where half board), transportation and all the necessary formalities for a great experience. To apply for such a trip, all you need to do is ask for an accreditation letter confirming that you are a pensioner (or a variation thereof) and, once you have received it, go to the official social tourism website to book your place.

However, submitting an application is no guarantee that a vacation subsidy will be allocated. The government prioritizes the elderly, those with fewer financial resources, the disabled and large families. Priority is given to first-time applicants and those who are willing to travel in the low season (October to June).
